From Bushes to Blessings: Our Ward Matters at work
Rustenburg – From bush cutting to rubbish removal, Our Ward Matters (OWM) is proving that teamwork truly transforms our community. Under the leadership of André van Dyk and Cllr Tanya Rothman, and with the dedication of the EPWP team, this grassroots initiative is bringing visible improvements to Ward 17 and Ward 16 (Geelhoutpark).
CLEAN-UPS THAT MATTER
On 17 September, as part of South Africa’s Clean-up and Recycle Week 2025, OWM volunteers tackled multiple streets in Geelhoutpark, including Koorsboom, Klopper, Waterboom, Pendoring, Manuka, Kremetart, Cycad, Santolina, and Raasblaar. Each cleared area represents a safer, cleaner space for residents and families.
On 18 September, OWM launched the Ward 17 Clean-up Challenge, calling on every resident to donate R100 (or whatever they can) to keep the momentum going. Teams cleared illegal dumping sites and cut back overgrown bushes in Elandsrivier and Swallows Avenue, an area flagged by Outdoor Arena Security as a hotspot for dumping and safety concerns.
By 19 September, the team split up to cover even more ground – with some working in Azaleapark, while others cut back dangerous overgrowth at the corner of Waterberg and Cuckoo Avenue near Waterfall Mall. These efforts are not just cosmetic: criminals often hide in overgrown bushes to ambush unsuspecting joggers and pedestrians.
The 22 September clean-up pushed further into Azaleapark, Selly Park, and Drakensberg Avenue. Storm drains were cleared, sand and rocks were removed, and grass cut back – making the area safer for walkers, joggers, and motorists alike.
CARING BEYOND CLEAN-UPS
On 23 September, OWM showed that their work is not only about clean streets, but also about caring hearts. Thanks to a kind donation from Agapé Gemeente, Mariska gifted household items that were sorted and distributed by OWM.
A CALL TO ACTION
Our Ward Matters continues to remind residents that cleaner, safer communities don’t happen by chance – they happen when everyone pitches in. Donations, big or small, make a difference, and volunteering time is equally valuable.
