Ancient cultures created holidays to mark seasons, honour gods, and unite communities. Romans had feriae, days reserved for rest, and Egyptians celebrated the harvest. 

In the Bible, God commands people to work six days and rest on the seventh — the Sabbath — helping establish a divine rhythm of labour and pause. Religious traditions later shaped many global holidays, and by 1880 the U.S. formalised its first federal holiday. Today, holidays blend ancient rituals, cultural identity, and society’s shared need for rest.
