Pit bull–type dogs are responsible for more fatal dog attacks in South Africa than any other breed, according to available statistics. Between 2004 and 2023, 38 of 56 fatal dog-attack deaths in South Africa were caused by pit bulls, far more than any other breed — other breeds accounted for only a few deaths each. 

While overall dog bite injuries are common, fatal attacks are rare — but the data shows pit bulls are involved in most of those that are deadly.
