Rustenburg – Laerskool Rustenburg’ initiative to collect food and raise funds for the Rustenburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Wednesday 4 March was a big success.

The school invited the community to watch Dolittle under the stars on their rugby field. In order to attend the event people had to bring pet food, blankets and toys or a cash donation.

They received mass support and a sea of picnic blankets and excited faces could be seen all around.
The heart behind this initiative was Laerskool Rustenburg educator Liza Marie Botha.

“I love animals and caring for them is something I want to teach children. I have a project every year to encourage the learners in my class to bring donations for the SPCA. This year we decided to not only involve the whole school but the community as well,” Botha said.

Moviegoers could also buy snacks to enjoy during the movie. A percentage of the sales will also go towards the SPCA.

Rustenburg SPCA manager André Eloff said: “I think this was a great idea and it is amazing to see how many people showed up to support the SPCA. Every bit helps and the donations that we received will certainly go a long way.”

There were stacks of dog and cat food, toys for the animals to play with and blankets to keep them warm during the cold nights.

“We are very grateful to Liza Marie and Laerskool Rustenburg for planning the evening. This will help a lot in taking care of the animals,” said Rustenburg SPCA committee chairman Jacques Cronje.

It was a great evening for family. This fun   fundraising made a big difference in the lives of the animals at the SPCA.
