HOPE BEYOND DARKNESS
Rustenburg Vet Student’s Fight for Her Vision
Rustenburg – At just 22 years old, Danike Marais should be looking forward to graduation and a lifetime of caring for animals. A fifth-year veterinary student, she grew up on her father’s cattle farm outside Swartruggens, where her love for animals was planted early. Now, that dream faces its toughest challenge yet — a rare eye disease that threatens her vision, her studies, and her future.
A Sudden Change | In 2023, Danike noticed something was wrong with her eyesight. What began as a small concern quickly grew into endless questions. After several consultations and specialist tests in July 2024, her worst fears were confirmed: a rare form of retinal dystrophy, a degenerative condition that steadily steals away sight.
“It was like the ground disappeared beneath me,” she says quietly. “Your whole future flashes before you — and suddenly, it’s uncertain.”
Dreams on the Line | For Danike, veterinary science is more than a degree. It’s the life she’s built since childhood, from days spent bottle-feeding calves to long nights preparing for exams. Now, her ability to continue depends on advanced treatment — which doctors believe may only be available in Germany.
“I’ve wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember. Giving up is not an option,” she says.
Faith in the Darkness | Despite the diagnosis, Danike insists this is not the end of her story. “This feels like a test of faith,” she explains. “I believe God’s hand is in this, and even though I don’t know how it will turn out, I know I’m not walking this road alone.”
Community Support | Her family and friends have launched a fundraising campaign through BackaBuddy — the “Danike Marais Retinal Dystrophy Fund” — to help cover the immense costs of overseas treatment, travel, and ongoing care. Already, messages and donations have been pouring in, giving her strength to keep moving forward.
“Every bit of support reminds me I’m not alone,” Danike says. “It’s not just about money — it’s hope.”
