ATM Bombers’ luck runs out
Rustenburg – At a time when it often feels like criminals hold the upper hand, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has delivered a major victory against organised crime.
On Thursday night, 18 September 2025, an intelligence-driven raid in Freedom Park, Phokeng, led to the recovery of a deadly arsenal: firearms, explosives, live ammunition, and stacks of dye-stained banknotes believed to be linked to violent ATM bombings. Two suspects, Itu Monjane (33) and Nelson Huehwa (34), were arrested on the spot.
The search didn’t end there. “A second raid in the same area uncovered more damning evidence – chemical containers and gloves allegedly used to wash stained money clean. These items were seized and sent for forensic analysis,” said sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi.
ATM and cash-in-transit bombings have become such a grim part of daily life. Withdrawing cash can feel like taking a risk. Spotting a cash van on the road is enough to make drivers change lanes or turn away altogether.
The high-risk operation was a combined effort between specialised SAPS units, including Rustenburg Crime Intelligence, Public Order Policing, the Local Criminal Record Centre, and the Explosives Unit.
The suspects made their first appearance at the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on Monday, 22 September, where they were remanded in custody. Investigations continue, and police have not ruled out further arrests. Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, district commissioner of Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, praised the police teams.
