Rustenburg – Rustenburg took the shameful 10th position, behind Hillbrow by just a fraction, in crime statistics as reported for the period April 2017 to March 2018 by the minister of police Bheki Cele.

In the greater North West Province, a dreadful picture emerged. The murders of women and children are drastically escalating to 231 murders.

The 2017-2018 crime statistics showed that South Africa recorded an increase in the number of reported serious crimes including murder, attempted murder and sexual offences.

Announcing the statistics, police minister Bheki Cele pointed the finger at previous police leaders for the escalating violent crime wave in SA. “On average 57 people are murdered each day, which brings us close to a war zone… Yet we are not at war,” Cele said.

National police commissioner general Khehla Sithole is putting the total shortage of police officers at about 62,000.

Nationally in the 2017-2018 time frame, a total of 20,336 murders were recorded, 1,320 more than the previous financial year.
