Rustenburg – The Newrak Impala rugby team demonstrated just why they are still a formidable force to reckon with when they powered to a 22-15 victory over Centurion in a Volcano Super Cup match.

The result was a very special one for the Rustenburg-based team as it was their first win in this year’s Volcano Super Cup. To put this victory into perspective, Centurion are currently placed second on the log and were always going to be a difficult opponent to defeat, especially on their home ground.

Newrak Impala, the 2019 Gold Cup champions, proved too hot to handle as they dominated proceedings throughout the duration of the match and gave the Centurion players a hard time on the field.

While it is difficult to single out an individual player who was outstanding, the forwards worked hard as a unit and managed to win most of the balls in the scrums, putting Centurion under pressure.
Jaco Botha, Marius Breytenbach and Shaldon Gibson all played with determination while the leadership qualities and experience of fullback and captain Berto van Wyk were also a talking point of the match.

There is still a long season ahead for the rugby team, who will go up against University of Pretoria (TUKS) this weekend at the Impala Rugby Club in Rustenburg.

Coaches Naas Olivier, Nelis Nel and Attie Strauss, who have done well as they continue to build a strong team, are hoping for the young Impala Rugby club players to give their best in front of their home supporters.
