Rustenburg – Rustenburg will “bee” the hive of sensory activities with the city’s brand-new Honey Festival.

Did you know it takes 12 worker bees their entire lives to collect enough nectar to make one teaspoon of honey? Attend the festival on Saturday 19 October at the Hervormede Kerk grounds to learn more about amazing bee and honey facts.

Organisers assure that this festival is not to be missed! Stands are still available if you wish to register as an exhibitor at the show or enter your honey into the honey competition.

Think fun in bucket loads for the whole family. Great food, an educational Kiddies Bees knees corner, informative bee talks in the spacious auditorium, boerewors, best Bee Beard contests, and finishing the evening with a dance.

Enter the Miss Honey Festival Queen pageant! Little bees can enter for the Miss Young Bee, Miss Sweetie Pie or Miss Teddy Bee.

After competing in the throw-and-catch an egg tournament, you can visit the many stalls offering delightful treats and interesting honey products from cosmetic to apitherapy. The highlight of the festival however, will be the honey competition!

Rustenburg Honey Competition 2019 will be hosted and judged by long-time, internationally accredited, honey judge Eddy Lear, his wife Tina Lear, and their team of honey judge stewards. The Honey Festival organisers recognise the craft of beekeeping as the perfect mix of passion, hard work, entomology, biology and botany.

This festival offers a wonderful opportunity for all beekeepers, industry members and agricultural stakeholders to participate in showcasing their products and or various business ventures.
The judging starts at 08:00, the gates open to the public at 09:00. The bee festival dance kicks off at 19:00.

Traditionally, entries in a honey competition are categorised into liquid honey light, medium, or dark; granulated (crystallised) honey, creamed honey, comb honey, frames of honey, wax blocks, crafted wax, mead and much more!

The judges and stewards examine the entries according to colour, taste, texture, density (viscosity), and general presentation of the entry. The exhibitor receives a score card with points according to these criteria. It’s a wonderful learning experience about the world of honey. Don’t miss this unique experience, and the opportunity to learn something about a valuable artisanal craft.
