AMCU mourns killing of Marikana leader 

Marikana/ Rustenburg – The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has learnt with great shock that yet another of its branch leaders at Sibanye-Stillwater’s platinum operations have been murdered.

The union calls on the police minister to ensure that the law takes its course and prays that swift justice will be served. 

Although the exact details surrounding the incident are still sketchy, initial reports indicate that the person (who will remain anonymous for now) received a telephone call on the afternoon of Saturday 18 January 2020. 

He proceeded to walk outside to his car where he was gunned down by an unknown assailant. 
AMCU condemns this vicious attack and sends its sincere condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of the fallen comrade. We pray that justice will take its course in finding the killer or killers of this breadwinner. 

Meanwhile, on Monday 3 June 2019, the High Court in Pretoria sentenced two assassins to prison following attacks on the same branch leadership of AMCU. 

While one of the perpetrators was handed a life sentence plus 70 years, the other accused received a sentence of 45 years. At the time, AMCU emphasised that the two convicted criminals were never members of AMCU and that they were never even employees of any of the mines in the Rustenburg area as they were assassins from the Eastern Cape hired by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

However, seven other alleged accomplices were released and reportedly participated in an incident in which people were armed with spears at the mine’s Roland Shaft. 
AMCU calls on the minister of police, Bheki Cele, to spare no resource in investigating this latest murder with utmost haste. 

The levels of crime and violence in the area has been the cause of great concern over the years and the perpetrators must be brought to book as swiftly as possible. AMCU will cooperate with law enforcement agents to ensure that justice is served.
