Rustenburg – The Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) has noted their utter shock and disdain for an incident in which the municipal manager Victor Makona, was assaulted by employees at the city’s electrical department on Wednesday 26 May.
People of the electrical department were unhappy with a new shift system in which the municipality would deploy teams of technicians to do electrical-related work including resolving complaints carried over into the evenings; and to work during weekends and long weekends to ensure that electrical complaints are resolved.
Apparently certain RLM technicians have reached their threshold for overtime work.
In Makona’s attempt to resolve the situation when the electrical workshop was closed off by employees, he was stoned and assaulted.
Makona was seriously injured and rushed to hospital where he is recovering well.
A docket was opened at SAPS.
Executive mayor councillor Mpho Khunou said the municipality has no place for such atrocities, and that it would not go unpunished. “We wish our municipal manager a speedy recovery, as his presence is critical in ensuring effective and efficient service delivery,” the mayor emphasised.
RLM director for Local Economic Development (LED) Edward Komane has been appointed acting municipal manager until further notice. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the city’s public safety directorate Joseph Khumalo on 014 590 3363.
