Koster/ Derby/ Rustenburg – Businesses must be careful of unscrupulous fraudsters offering counterfeit money as payment for products and services. This warning comes after several businesses almost fell victim to a criminal with counterfeit money on Thursday 12 August.

The perpetrator first tried his luck at a tuisnywerheid where the owner chased him away. He then proceeded to a biltong shop where, once again, the owner suspected something might be wrong and refused to take the money. He finally met his match at the liquor store next door. The owner of the store, Carel van Heerden has had a few run ins with people offering counterfeit money and accordingly, all the notes that pass through his till is scanned under an ultraviolet light.

“I know their modus operandi by now, they come in, take one beer and then try to pay with a R200 note. This man followed suit and when he handed my wife the note, she could feel it just didn’t feel right. Once she checked it under the light, she confirmed her suspicions and called me,” he said.
Having dealt with these situations in the past, Carel took the money and actually wrote with word FAKE in big letters on it. “By doing this, it prevents the person from just moving on until he finds someone willing to take the money.”
Banks refuse to take the counterfeit cash resulting in business owners losing money.
Businesses are urged to report any incidents such incidents to the SAPS.
