Majakaneng/ Brits – Sibanye-Stillwater has continued to improve lives through mining by funding and implementing projects that uplift their host communities.

While this approach is in line with a regulatory requirement for all South African mining companies to contribute towards local community upliftment, Sibanye-Stillwater has committed itself towards going the extra mile by working around the clock to carry out projects that address the needs of communities.

On 7 September, Sibanye-Stillwater demonstrated once again how community building and development initiatives are a major priority by handing over the Reteng Masilo Centre for the Elderly and People with Disabilities to the Segwaelane community. It was decided to name the centre after Reteng Masilo, a community champion who approached Sibanye-Stillwater and highlighted the needs of the elderly and disabled people living in Segwaelane.

Despite the passing on of Masilo during the construction of the centre, Sibanye forged ahead to make his legacy a reality.

The centre, which is located near Majakaneng and currently accommodates 90 beneficiaries, will go a long way in providing care and support to beneficiaries.

Ward councillor Aubrey Molotsi as well as representatives from Bapo Ba Mogale Disability Forum, Sibanye-Stillwater and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy toured the facility during the handover.

Delivering the keynote address, Sibanye-Stillwater SVP and head of mining, Marikana Operations Johann Kleyn said:

“We share the value created by our mining operations through partnerships and collaboration and engaging transparently with communities.”

Department of Mineral Resources and Energy Regional Manager for the North West Province Phumudzo Nethwadzi urged the Segwaelane community to ensure the facility is kept clean and it used for its proper purpose.

Sibanye-Stillwater senior vice president (SVP) and head of mining, Marikana Operations Johann Kleyn (left) handed over the keys of the facility to Reteng Masilo Centre for the Elderly and People with Disabilities CEO Lebogang Masilo.
A tour of the facility left invited guests convinced about Sibanye-Stillwater’s positive impact in the community.
