NW – In a sweeping crackdown against crime, North West police, in collaboration with various law enforcement bodies, have successfully executed Operation Shanela. This intensive week-long operation, spanning from 1 to 7 April 2024, has resulted in the arrest of 1,011 suspects involved in a wide array of criminal activities.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone detailed: “The operation targeted individuals involved in serious crimes, including aggravated robbery, murder, attempted murder, and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Additionally, offenses such as drug dealing, illegal liquor trade, drug possession, burglary, and driving under the influence have been addressed.” 

The operation was not only focused on apprehending suspects actively engaged in criminal activities but also aimed at locating and arresting those with outstanding warrants. “Of the 1,011 arrested, 392 were wanted individuals, successfully captured through targeted detective-led raids,” brigadier Mokgwabone added.

Photo: The scale of Operation Shanela’s reach and its achievements are noteworthy. Throughout the operation, 128 premises were searched, along with 2,523 individuals and 1,270 vehicles. These efforts led to the seizure of a considerable amount of contraband, including alcohol, precious metals, cellular phones, various drugs, seven firearms, copper cables, and two vehicles.
